This series of 12 portraits was made during the winter of 2003 into the spring of 2004. The images do not follow any specific chronology, but are rather meant to be considered in a fluid state, allowing the viewer to move freely between them.
Each woman photographed was chosen for some very crucial yet intangible quality about her, be it physical, intellectual or spiritual. The images themselves aren't meant to function as direct portraits of each individual. Rather, they become a kind of female cipher, marking simultaneous individuality and commonality. Each figure is existing in an environment of metaphoric and literal states of interior psychology and location. The images initially wash over you in lush colors, pearly light and beautiful faces, but over time spent looking, the photographs become an examination of a psychological and emotional state of being.
